The stories in this book give a fascinating picture of Victorian life through the vivid descriptions of untimely death. Drawn from the burial record of Sheffield’s principal burial ground, the General Cemetery, these are tales of tragic accidents, rejected love, deep despair and sometimes plain foolishness.Danger and Despair recounts some of the unpleasant, not to say horrific, events that lead to their deaths- men and women- young and old- rich and poor. The book contains maps that will help you locate the graves of those whose stories are told here.Danger and Despair is one of a series of books about the remarkable lives and deaths of some of the 87,000 people buried in the General Cemetery. The General Cemetery is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Sheffield, and is only a short walk from the City Centre.

One of the first purpose built cemeteries in England it is the last resting place of residents ranging from the humblest to some of the most important in Britain’s Industrial History. In spite of its closeness to some of Sheffield’s busiest thoroughfares it is, today, a place of calm and natural beauty, maintained by the Sheffield General Cemetery Trust, a Charitable organisation wholly dependant on donations and grant aid. This book was researched and designed by volunteers of the Cemetery trust.
